M1 J24 Improvement 10 April 2015

Improvement of the A50 approach to J24 of the M1, currently a simple roundabout which forms a significant bottleneck.

The improvement will provide a path through the roundabout, controlled by traffic signals, to allow A50 to M1 South traffic to avoid the roundabout altogether and join the M1 at junction 23A.

M1 Widening J10-13 (Luton-Bedford) 7 October 2014

Plans for widening of the M1 between junctions 10 and 13 to dual-four lane standard have now been watered down to hard shoulder running. The original plan was for full on-line widening including improvements to junctions 11, 12 and 13. The amended scheme includes capacity improvements to junctions 11 and 12 only - these improvements are subject to separate statutory procedures, and so will commence at a later date than the HSR works, although still within the overall timeframe for the project.

M1 J19 Catthorpe Viaduct Replacement 29 September 2014

A scheme to replace the bridge carrying the southbound M6 over the M1. This whole junction is due to be remodelled to solve its endemic congestion problems, but has been further delayed by a government spending review. As a result it was decided that replacement of this bridge could not be put off any longer and will go ahead anyway. The existing bridge has been supported by temporary props in the southbound carriageway of the M1 for some years now.

M1 Widening J21-29 (Leicester-Chesterfield) 29 August 2010

On-line widening of the M1 between junctions 21 and 30 to dual-four lane standard. The widening will turn the hard shoulder into a fourth lane, and construct a new hard shoulder alongside. It seems unlikely that the finished road will have continuous hard shoulders. Additional climbing lanes will be provided where necessary and some junction improvements are being considered.

M1 Widening J6a-10 (M25-Luton) 23 January 2009

On-line widening of the M1 between junctions 6a and 10 to dual-four lane motorway standard. Proposals that the new lane would be designated a HOV lane, for the use of vehicles carrying more than one person, have now been dropped as the Highways Agency considered it unsafe and the local police force refused to enforce it.
