A303 Stonehenge - Ilminster 28 April 2012

Upgrade of all the remaining single-carriageway sections of A303 between the associated works at Stonehenge and the Horton Roundabout at Ilminster. The new dual carriageway sections will be grade-separated and built to dual two-lane standard. From Ilminster, the A358 will be upgraded to reach the M5.

This scheme was withdrawn following the cancellation of the Stonehenge Tunnel scheme in 2010.

A417 Brockworth and Cowley Improvement 5 February 2012

Construction of a new dual-two lane route to realign the A417. It will provide a bypass of Brockworth, then a safer ascent and descent of the hills around Crickley and the Air Balloon roundabout. A third lane will be provided on uphill sections. A new free-flowing junction will be constructed to replace the current roundabout. This scheme is the selected option, a tunnel under the hill and a signalised junction at the Air Balloon having been ruled out. This scheme will complete the dualling of the A417/A419 between the M4 and M5.

A31 Canford Bottom Junction Improvement 12 October 2011

The aims of the scheme are to optimise traffic flow and thus reduce congestion at the Canford Bottom junction, to the east of Wimborne Minster in Dorset. A "hamburger" junction will be created by extending the A31 (as a dual carriageway) through the existing roundabout. The roundabout will be fully signalised at all entry and exit points to manage traffic flow. In the longer term, councils in the area are preparing a transport plan which includes a proposal to upgrade this junction to full grade-separation.

A38 Taunton Third Way 30 September 2011

Town centre link road, including a new bridge over the River Tone. Most of the route involves the realignment of existing streets and junction improvements.

M5 J12 Improvements 6 February 2011

The aim of this scheme is to improve traffic flow by increasing the capacity of the junction. This will be achieved by adding lanes to the sliproads, roundabouts, and overbridge, and by building new, dedicated filter lanes north- and southbound between the M5 and the B4008 (A38) to Gloucester. The junction will also be signalised.

A354 Weymouth Relief Road 8 January 2011

A new alignment for the primary A354 into Weymouth, bypassing the bottlenecks in Upwey and Broadwey. The road will start from the Ridgeway just north of the notorious "Bincombe kink" and strike eastwards to meet the Littlemoor roundabout (where the A353 will be diverted to meet it), before hugging the South West Main Line to connect with the top of the Weymouth Bypass at Manor House roundabout. The road will be single-carriageway with one flyover junction and two new roundabouts. It is expected to be completed well in advance the Olympic sailing events in Weymouth Harbour in 2012.

A358 Ilminster - Taunton 25 December 2010

Upgrade of the existing single carriageway road to dual two-lane carriageways with grade-separated junctions. This route will replace the substandard A303 between Ilminster and Exeter as the trunk route from London to the South West. It avoids having to improve the A303 through the Blackdown Hills, but will increase the traffic load on the already-busy M5. Critics claim that it is inviting problems by concentrating all traffic for the south west on one long section of the M5.

A419 Commonhead and Blunsdon Improvement 16 June 2009

Two separate schemes that are being processed together, as they will result in full grade separation of the A417/A419 route between the M4 and the A417 Brockworth and Cowley Improvement scheme.

The Commonhead scheme involves construction of a new dual two-lane flyover at the Commonhead roundabout southeast of Swindon. The roundabout is already laid out for future grade separation so this work is relatively straightforward.

A38 Dobwalls Bypass 1 November 2008

Construction of a new bypass to carry the A38 around the village of Dobwalls. Currently the main road between Plymouth and Bodmin passes through the town, causing heavy traffic in the holiday season, and a bypass has been planned since the 1960s. The new road will be dual two-lane standard, running from the roundabout to the west to tie in to the Liskeard bypass.

Region

A30 Bodmin - Indian Queens 26 October 2008

Construction of a new dual-two lane grade separated dual carriageway on a new alignment to replace the current A30 between the southern terminus of the Bodmin bypass and Indian Queens. It will plug the gap between dual carriageway at each end and provide a continuous grade-separated route on the A30 from Bodmin Moor to the A39 fork.

A361 Barnstaple Western Bypass 26 October 2008

Construction of a new single two-lane route to the west of Barnstaple, connecting the A39 Atlantic Highway with the A361 North Devon road. The scheme includes a new 400m bridge over the River Taw, and will provide for the potential reopening of the railway line beyond Barnstaple.

A303 Boscombe Down 26 October 2008

Reconstruction of the A303 junction at Boscombe Down, east of Amesbury, about 2.5 miles east of Stonehenge. The new interchange will provide full access, adding the missing west-facing sliproads, and will replace the existing bridge. This is the earliest phase of the A303 realignment scheme that will eventually see the road tunnelled under the Stonehenge site. The new interchange will be renamed Solistice Park.

A303 Stonehenge Tunnel 23 October 2008

New three kilometre dual-tube bored tunnel to carry the A303 past the National Trust and World Heritage Site of Stonehenge. This will both remove traffic from the existing A303, which runs just a few yards from Stonehenge itself, and provide additional capacity as the existing road is single carriageway. The scheme includes improvements close to the site also, including a bypass at Winterbourne Stoke and a flyover at Countess Roundabout.
