Kingston Bypass

You are here: Home - Media - Video - Kingston Bypass

One of the earliest dual carriageways in the country, the Kingston Bypass was built in the 1930s as a broad road through open countryside, with three lanes in each direction. In true thirties style, it wasn't long before it had been lined with semi-detached houses and swallowed up in the sprawl of London suburbia. Renovated in the 1960s, the six lanes were retained down the middle as a grade-separated route in the most incredible of conditions. Today it's as impressive as it is alarmingly narrow and poorly aligned.

This video is experimental - it has a commentary throughout, done live as the video was recorded. It was also recorded early in the morning when the sun was low, and as a result visibility is often poor.
