A465 Dowlais Top to Hirwaun Dualling 24 November 2016
Upgrade of the existing single three-lane A465 Heads of the Valleys Road between Dowlais Top and Hirwaun to provide a grade-separated dual two-lane expressway.
This scheme will be the final upgrade of the complete route from Abergavenny to Neath and will complete the continuous dual carriageway route between the A40 and M4 that has been progressively constructed since the mid-1970s.
A465 Gilwern to Brynmawr Dualling 5 September 2016
Upgrade of the existing A465 between Gilwern and Brynmawr, mostly on the line of the existing road but with some off-line diversions, to dual two-lane standard with full grade separation. Most of this scheme lies within the Brecon Beacons National Park, and the road passes through the ecologically sensitive Clydach Gorge.
Geological conditions and the sensitive nature of the site mean the duration of this scheme is longer than for most upgrade projects and the finish date has been put back to 2019 from the original aspiration of 2017.
The Heads of the Valleys 24 October 2015
The A465 Heads of the Valleys Road is one of the most spectacular trunk roads in the UK, and building it required some of the most remarkable civil engineering. This is the story of how the road was built in the 1960s, and how it's being rebuilt today.
A465 Abergavenny to Gilwern Dualling 26 October 2008
Upgrade of the existing single-carriageway road to dual two-lane standard, connecting the existing dual carriageway sections of A40 and A465 at each end. The route will eventually replace all existing single carriageway sections of the A465 between Abergavenny and the M4 with grade separated dual carriageway.
