The maps in this section aim to provide a visual history of the motorway network, by having a map for each year since the first motorway opened, showing which sections of road were open in that year, along with other information such as the month of opening or major alterations to existing sections where such information is available.
The maps owe their existence to John Brown who came up with the idea. They are produced using data kindly supplied by the Motorway Archive, collected and collated by Peter Hewitt and Tony Priest.
