Scheme Outline
Widening of the existing A830 from single track road to two-lane single carriageway, partly on-line and partly off-line, providing a well-engineered and safe route. This will eliminate the last single-track trunk route in the United Kingdom. The rest of the 'Road to the Isles' has already been upgraded, with the previous section finished in 2003.

Progress
- October 2005
- The project has now been put out to tender, with work due to start summer 2006.
- March 2007
- Morrison Construction has won the contract and work will start in summer 2007 on the last section of single-track road between Mallaig and Fort William.
- July 2007
- Earthworks have now started on the road, which is due to be finished in May 2009.
- September 2007
- Lunchtime road closures are now happening on certain days to allow works to proceed. However, local press is now reporting that two railway bridges on the route will not be widened or improved to accept high vehicles because the contractor made an inappropriately low quote for the works. The road will now continue to have a height limit and at two points will probably become signal controlled with alternating traffic.
- July 2008
- Much of the earthworks - including large culverts for watercourses to pass below the new road - are nearing completion. Lunchtime closures of the road continue for now.
