Scheme Outline
Construction of a second two-lane tunnel alongside the existing one at Jarrow. The new tunnel would take all southbound traffic, with the existing one converted to take all northbound traffic. This project would provide continuous dual carriageway from the A1(M) at Dishforth via Middlesbrough and Newcastle to the A1 at Wide Open.

Progress

- The Government approves construction of the second tunnel. Construction is due to start within a year.
- June 2006
- A legal challenge to the tunnel's construction by a member of Friends of the Earth has failed. The Tyne and Wear Passenger Transport Association will now look to appoint a concessionaire as soon as possible.
