Scheme Outline
Upgrade of existing single and dual carriageway A1 between Morpeth and Alnwick in Northumberland to dual two-lane standard throughout, with grade-separated junctions. May include upgrade of the Alnwick bypass to the same standard.
Timeline
- 2001
- The Scottish Executive postpones indefinitely plans to complete dualling of the A1 from Edinburgh to the English border, because the Highways Agency has no plans to do the same on the English side.
- 2002
- Department for Transport announces dualling in England only as far as Alnwick, because there are no plans to dual the A1 in Scotland to the border.
- 2005
- Morpeth to Felton section is given the green light.
