Scheme Outline

Construction of a new road bridge across the river Mersey about a mile east of the existing Runcorn-Widnes bridge. The scheme includes construction of approach roads on each bank to connect to the Runcorn Expressways and the A562 towards Liverpool.

Timeline

1905
Runcorn transporter bridge is built, allowing the first vehicle crossings at this point.
1961
Runcorn-Widnes bridge opens to traffic.
2003
Advertising begins the campaign for a petition in favour of the New Mersey Crossing to relieve the existing bridge.

Progress

May 2006
The Government approved the construction of the new crossing on 29 March 2006 and preparatory work is now under way. It has not yet been announced when construction will begin.
