Scheme Outline
Upgrade of existing two-lane all purpose dual carriageway A1 to three-lane motorway standard, from Dishforth (northern terminus of North Yorkshire motorway) to Barton (southern terminus of County Durham motorway). This is part of the Highways Agency's strategy to upgrade the A1(M) from Doncaster to Scotch Corner.
Timeline
- 1963
- A1(M) bypass of Darlington constructed from Scotch Corner to Brafferton, present-day junctions 56 to 59.
- 1964
- Work begins on remaining north-east section of A1(M) from Brafferton to Tyne Tunnel.
- 1992
- Walshford to Dishforth section of A1 upgraded to A1(M) full motorway, junctions 47 to 49. Regarded by many as only doing the 'easy bit', leaving the notorious Wetherby bypass to the south and sub-standard A1 to the north.
