Kent County Council
A28 Chart Road Improvement 3 July 2017
Widening of the A28 Chart Road in Ashford to provide a dual two-lane road between the Tank Roundabout at Carlton Road and the Matalan Roundabout at the B2229 Brookfield Road. The A28 north from the Tank Roundabout to the M20 already has two lanes in each direction and this section, connecting that dual carriageway to the Great Chart Bypass, is now a bottleneck.
The scheme will see a second bridge across the railway to carry southbound traffic, some turns in and out of side roads prohibited, and improvements to the roundabouts at each end and to the junction of Loudon Way.
A28 Sturry Link Road 4 January 2016
Construction of a new single two-lane road to bypass the level crossing at Sturry where the A28 crosses the Canterbury-Ramsgate railway line.
The new road will allow through traffic to avoid delays caused by the level crossing and will open up land to the west of Sturry to new development, where Kent County Council expects the construction of up to 1,000 new houses.
At the eastern end of the new road, a short spur will connect to the A291.
A256/A299 East Kent Access improvements 29 September 2014
The East Kent Access improvements will see almost five miles of the A256 and A299 upgraded to dual carriageway. The scheme will improve the A256 between the end of East Kent Access Phase 1, at Richborough, and the A256/A299 junction at Lord of the Manor, Ramsgate; and improve the final section of the A299 Thanet Way, between Minster Roundabout and Lord of the Manor.
M20 Junction 9 and Drovers Improvement 21 May 2012
Work to widen each of the existing sliproads to the M20 at junction 9 from one to two lanes, and to widen the roundabout from two to three lanes.
The scheme includes the widening of the nearby Drovers Roundabout (junction with the A20 and A28), and the installation of a new Park and Ride site for Ashford.
The scheme will also remove an existing foot and cycle path that requires pedestrians to cross the eastbound entry sliproad to the M20 immediately before the start-of-restrictions sign. Foot and cycle traffic will now cross on a parallel footbridge.
A2 Wincheap Improvement 25 August 2011
Proposal to upgrade the A2-A28 interchange at Wincheap to provide north facing sliproads, in order to improve access to the Wincheap and Chartham areas, as well as cutting congestion in western Canterbury. At present the junction only has south-facing sliproads.
The Londonbound on-slip to the A2 will be the first of two to be constructed, with clearing work starting in September. A former community centre will be demolished to make way for this along with new traffic signals.
A227 Borough Green and Platt By-pass 6 February 2011
Construction of a new single-carriageway road to bypass the existing A227 at Borough Green, running west of the urban area between Dark Hill roundabout and Wrotham Road.
The bypass was removed from the South East Plan, and is no longer an aspiration of Kent County Council.
